Emotional Trauma

Emotional trauma is often the root of addiction and mental health conditions.

Emotional Trauma: What You Need to Know

Emotional trauma can be a significant factor in the development of addiction and mental health conditions. Conditions such as severe depression, anxiety disorders, and even personality disorders have their roots in emotional trauma. However, processing emotional trauma allows you to reconnect with your whole self. There are a number of experiential therapies that offer relief from emotional trauma, including Somatic Experiencing, which was developed by Meadows Senior Fellow Dr. Peter Levine. Somatic Experiencing is just one part of a holistic recovery program that we offer to young adults suffering from emotional trauma and other conditions.

Effects of Emotional Trauma

Trauma can stem from a number of events or circumstances, such as childhood abuse and neglect; witnessing acts of violence; war, accidents, and natural disasters; grief and loss; medical interventions; and physical, emotional, or sexual abuse.

Emotional trauma pertains to your thoughts, feelings, and memories related to the traumatic event you experienced. These may grow in complexity over time, and symptoms may cause you severe distress.

If emotional trauma is left untreated, you may develop PTSD, which can be intense and life-disrupting, or you may self-medicate with substances. Trauma is an underlying factor in nearly every case of addiction or mental health issues (up to 90%). Processing trauma is critical to finding healing from disruptive symptoms and any mental or behavioral health conditions.

Symptoms of prolonged trauma may include:

  • Intense, disruptive memories
  • Persistent exhaustion
  • Depression
  • Paranoia
  • Sleep disturbances and disorders
  • Physical sensations
  • Fear and anxiety
  • Disaffectation
  • Continuous distress

The Stats on Emotional Trauma

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA):

  • Two out of three children reported experiencing at least one traumatic event by age 16.
  • In 2015, an average of 683,000 children had experienced abuse and neglect.
  • One in six adolescents has experienced cyberbullying.
  • 12% of physically ill youth and 19% of injured youth have PTSD.
  • 54% of US families have been affected by some type of disaster.

According to The National Council:

  • In the US alone, 70% of adults (over 220 million people) have experienced some type of traumatic event at least once in their lives.
  • 90% of clients in the public behavioral health system have experienced trauma.

Treating Emotional Trauma

At the Claudia Black Young Adult Center, we conduct assessments to discover your unique treatment needs. We are focused on helping young adults resolve trauma, learn valuable life skills, and develop new coping habits.

Our experiential therapies include neurofeedback, mindfulness practices, equine-assisted psychotherapy, challenge courses, trauma-informed psychodrama, EMDR, and Somatic Experiencing. These evidence-based forms of treatment have proven effective in helping to process and overcome emotional trauma. They allow you to reconnect with your whole self. Trauma disrupts that connection to the mind, body, and emotions with pain and negative associations, but we understand how trauma works and know how to rebuild that connection in a positive way.

We also focus on the power of safe communities where young adults can engage with peers in a secure, nurturing environment. Our family program also helps to promote healing for loved ones, who are often the support system that helps a young adult sustain recovery.

You can experience healing from traumatic events that restores your well-being, self-esteem, and willingness to engage in life activities. Fortunately, full recovery is possible and well worth the effort.
